When Should You Replace an Old Lead Water Supply Pipe?

Many older properties across the North East were originally built with lead water supply pipes connecting the mains to the property. While lead pipes can last for decades, they do deteriorate over time and can present both practical and health-related concerns.

Why Lead Pipes Become a Problem

Lead is a soft metal that corrodes gradually when in contact with water. Over many years, this corrosion can cause the internal diameter of the pipe to narrow, reducing water flow and pressure. In more advanced cases, the pipe can develop cracks or pinhole leaks, leading to water loss underground.

There are also well-documented health concerns associated with lead in drinking water, particularly for young children and pregnant women. While modern water treatment processes reduce the risk, replacing a lead supply pipe removes the concern entirely.

Signs Your Lead Pipe May Need Replacing

    • Visibly old, grey or dull-coloured pipework at the stopcock or boundary box
    • Recurring leaks on the supply pipe
    • Noticeably low water pressure throughout the property
    • Discoloured water when first turning on taps
    • A property built before the 1970s that has never had the supply pipe replaced

What Does Lead Pipe Renewal Involve?

A lead pipe renewal involves replacing the old lead pipe with a modern alternative — typically MDPE (medium-density polyethylene), which is durable, flexible and safe for drinking water.

The process begins with a survey to assess the existing pipe route and condition. A new route is planned, and the replacement pipe is installed — often using moling to minimise surface disruption where possible.

When Is Renewal Better Than Repair?

If a lead pipe has developed a single isolated leak, a localised repair may be sufficient in the short term. However, if the pipe is showing signs of general deterioration — multiple leaks, poor pressure, visible corrosion — then full renewal is usually the more reliable and cost-effective option.
